I have always loved animals, all animals. As a child I would bring home countless “found” pets. Well, at least that’s what I told my parents. My first job was learning to groom dogs and as I came into my adulthood I would spend the next portion of my life as a veterinary technician. I started my own business opening up a dog daycare / training facility in the heart of Malibu, catering to the elite and their dogs for the next 18 years. Today I help families in their homes giving owners the tools and knowledge to manage their dogs well after the trainer has left the building . After all, ultimately YOU are their pack leader for life.
Every dog is unique and has its own personality. That’s why after evaluating your dog, I create a specific plan for both of you to follow. Knowing the characteristics of breeds and cross- breeds is an important component when training dogs. That’s why cookie cutter plans fall short. So much of dog training is energy and understanding traits that are inherent of breeds. The terrier for instance, who digs or the husky, who bolts. At the core they are who they are but we can manage their behavior thru positive training and a better understanding of their primal past. Dogs feed off of your energy, whether that’s calm and confident or nervous and unsure. They are like little mirrors of you. By giving you the tools to better communicate what you expect from them and what they need from you to understand them, makes a happy owner and a confident dog. Most of my clients have similar issues with their dogs. One of the most prevalent is what they describe as on leash dog aggression. In reality very few of the dogs are dog aggressive. What is really happening is a dogs insecure reaction to other approaching dogs and most of the time the reason for this is actually perpetuated by the owners uncertainty. Your nervous energy bolts right thru that extension of you ie: the leash and instantly the dog feels your apprehension and assumes something isn’t right. Which in turn makes the dog nervous resulting in that barking and lunging at the oncoming dog. Most times the owner isn’t even aware that they are now white knuckling the leash and your dog thinks you need protecting. As this daily ritual escalates without counter conditioning the dog thinks this is what you need. This is just one example of how your energy and intent plays a huge role in dog training. You will see how just little tweaks in your behavior will reflect positively with your dog.
My program requires first an evaluation in your home so I can observe the daily routine with your dog . This usually takes about an hour and a half and we will go over all your concerns and what you expect. I will conduct a brief temperament test and overall evaluation of his/her personality. We will then set up your program to start training. This is usually a 3 week commitment. It takes that long to learn new wanted behaviors and weed out the unwanted. The course is 4 days a week for 3 weeks. I will work alone with the dog for the first 3 days of every week and bring you, the owner, in on the 4th day of every week. I will teach you what the dog has learned and you will have a clear understanding of how to reinforce the new behaviors and keep them up for life.
